Founded in 1995, we now have around 200 members.
Our mission is one of “Sharing the sport of sailing with people with a wide range and degree of disability, through recreation, training and racing – towards the limits of individual aspirations.” This might range from learning to sail, the satisfaction of sailing solo, racing at local, national or international level or simply enjoying the sensation of being out on the water in a beautiful setting such as Rutland Water.
We own a fleet of nearly 30 boats in eight different classes, with one, two, four or six-person capacity, offering a wide range of sailing/on-water experience. And, as corporate members of Rutland Sailing Club, we have excellent, accessible facilities ashore and afloat.
We have the usual sailing facilities, including changing rooms and clubhouse, but we also have a changing suite equipped for people with disabilities, e.g. electric hoist.
On the outside, we have ramps for wheelchairs and golf buggies to ferry people around the site.
Rutland Sailability activities run throughout the year. From April to the end of October, we sail on Thursdays 9.30 till 15.00 & Saturdays 9.30 till noon. Subject to demand, this may extend into Saturday afternoons. On Thursday evenings & Sundays, a growing number of our members compete (very successfully) in the Rutland Sailing Club racing.
Over the winter, Sailability still meets on a Thursday. The winter programme is well attended & offers further training, interesting talks or simply the opportunity to meet up for a chat.
